Chapter 15
As I left the Baxtersâ and drove back to town, I put my phone in the hands-free holder and told it to call Tobey Stone. When his voice mail came on, I left him a message to call me and then thought about my conversation with Shelley. I was pretty sure if I asked Cyrus directly why he needed to borrow money from his sister he wouldn't tell me, so I needed to be a little sneakier.
Maybe now would be a good time to stop by the Pawfection Pet Supplies and talk to Joseph Atwater. While I knew he wasn't a fan of the mayor, I wasn't exactly sure of his relationship with the deputy mayor, but he seemed to me like someone in the know and also very vocal. So, if he knew something, he might be willing to talk. It would also give me a chance to see how I felt about him as a suspect since he had been so vocal at the Chamber meeting about how angry he was at the mayor. While I was there, I could order some duck treats for Topknot. If there was such a thing.
I called Cynthia to make sure everything was okay at the flower shop and to make sure she didn't need me back right away, which of course she didn't. I sometimes thought I probably made things more difficult for her and Wendy because they knew so much more than I did.
I soon pulled into the parking area behind the pet store without even trying for street parking out front, as usually during the lunch hour there wasn't any to be had.
I pushed the door open and immediately saw Joseph helping another customer. He spotted me and gave a big smile and waved, motioning he would be with me in a minute, and I nodded, heading toward the dog treat aisle. I had been in here so many times since Bella came into my life, I was really surprised I hadn't had a formal introduction to Joseph before meeting him at the Chamber of Commerce meeting.
âWhat brings you in? Did you come so we could look up those duck treats?â Joseph said with a wide grin.
âDuck snacks are definitely on the top of my list.â
âCome to the back with me and let's see what we can find,â he said, and I followed him down a short hallway to his office. He pulled an extra chair around next to his and motioned for me to sit while he took a seat and woke his computer up. Typing a few keys, he quickly pulled up a site that looked like a wholesaler for pet supplies.
âThis is where I order the majority of my stuff because they have the best prices, and it seems like they cater to every animal. I've even seen specials pop up for monkeys.â
âMonkeys? I didn't know it was even legal to have pet monkeys.â
âHonestly, I'm not sure it is. I think you have to have special permits or something.
